I recently travelled to Ghana with Operation Smile to witness their life-changing cleft care up close. What I saw, felt, and experienced changed the way I think about purpose, impact, and what truly matters.

I had the chance to travel to Cape Coast, Ghana, with Operation Smile.

Alongside a few members of the MiSmile team and wider community, we joined their short-term surgical programme to support wherever we could and witness the life-changing work they’re doing firsthand.

This wasn’t a campaign. This wasn’t a strategy session. It was real. It was raw. And it reminded me exactly why we do what we do – not just as professionals, but as people.

Witnessing the journey

Over five days in Cape Coast, I watched the Operation Smile team screen 123 patients and carry out 69 surgeries for children with cleft lip and palate conditions.

Some families travelled more than 20 hours across Ghana just to be seen. Others had waited years for this moment, a chance for their child to receive the care they needed and deserved.

I had the privilege of being part of that journey from start to finish. From registration and screening through to selection and surgery days, we were there, helping where we could, learning every step of the way, and witnessing things I’ll never forget.

Some children arrived shy and uncertain, clinging to their parents, shaped by how others had looked at them their whole lives. Others were full of confidence and curiosity, laughing, playing, and waving at everyone in sight.

One little boy who barely spoke on day one was cracking jokes by day three. A mother, quiet and composed throughout, finally let herself cry. Not from fear, but from relief. The atmosphere changed day by day, and so did the people in it. Families, patients, volunteers, medics. Strangers who felt like family by the end of the week.

This was purpose in motion.

Ready for the Operation Smile programme.

What stuck with me

Of course, the surgeries were incredible to witness, but what I’ll remember forever is the care in the quiet moments. The warmth in every greeting. The calm professionalism of the team. The way each child was treated like the only one that mattered.

Operation Smile isn’t just about surgery. It’s long-term, comprehensive cleft care. From speech therapy and dental support to psychosocial help, they’re committed to changing lives far beyond the operating room.

Even without a medical background, I never felt like an outsider. Whether helping with admin, entertaining the children, or simply being a calming presence, it was clear that everyone had a part to play. And I was proud to play mine.

The lessons I brought home

When I came home, people asked what the biggest takeaway was. The truth is, I’m still working it out. But I know this:

There’s something powerful about being in a room where everything is centred around care. Every detail, every decision, every conversation is about helping someone feel safe, supported, and seen.

We talk about purpose a lot. But in Ghana, I saw what it looks like when purpose is lived, not just spoken about. It isn’t loud or attention-seeking. It’s steady, sincere, and deeply human.

We’re so proud to support Operation Smile, and I’m even more grateful for what they reminded me of. Humility. Perspective. And the importance of doing work that truly matters.

“This wasn’t a holiday. It wasn’t a photo op.
It was a reminder of why we do what we do and who we do it for.”
